This course is for adult learners. It is suitable for beginners as well as those with experience in pottery and ceramics.
Times and Duration
This course is taught on Monday mornings during term time for a duration of 10 to 13 weeks, depending on the length of the school term. There is a one week break during half term. The schedule is available on our Term Timetable (please see Term Time & Holidays link above). Each class is 2.5 hours long, running from 9:30am till 12:00 noon.
The Japanese Pottery Studio is designed and led by Japanese ceramics graduate artist Akiko Matsuda. This course explores the wonderfully intricate and specialised world of Japanese pottery. You will learn the key concepts and techniques in Japanese pottery and the magnificent art form that it represents. Through the weeks we’ll throw small bowls, Yunomi, mugs, pinch pots based on the RAKU theory and a whole lot more, set in a context of good studio etiquette.
Akiko is more than happy to assist and lead in both Japanese and English so don’t be shy to join us if you think that the sessions are exclusively for Japanese speakers!
If the term has already started
It is also possible to register for the remainder of the course at any point in the term, depending on availability. The price is calculated at £30 per class multiplied by the number of classes remaining to the end of term. This can be paid in person at the class or please contact us on 020 8576 6278 during business hours. The course price displayed on this site is for the entire term.
Included in the price
The price of this course includes all your material costs. Shared tools, aprons and towels are also provided. You are welcome to bring in specialist clays and glazes provided that they are suitable for the earthenware firings we offer. Firing fees are not included.
There is an additional charge for firing, which helps us keep the course costs down. It gives you the freedom to practice and experiment before you decide which pieces you would like to keep, whilst also doing your bit for the environment! The charge is £1 per 100g of weight of your finished work. This price includes both the bisque and the glaze firings. Our firing fees are not for profit. The work is weighed before the first firing. Firing fees can be paid at your class by cash or card.
